Who is Herne the Hunter?
Through centuries of hearsay and legend, speculation and imagination, wishful thinking and misunderstanding – not to mention an astonishing cast of influencers including William Shakespeare, George III, Queen Victoria, Jacob Grimm, John Masefield, Alan Garner, Susan Cooper and Terry Pratchett – the fabled antlered man of British folklore has been rendered a forest-haunting ghost, a staple character of British fantasy literature, and a manifestation of the Celtic horned god Cernunnos.
Can the origins of Herne be found in the life of a real person? Is there evidence to back claims of his spiritual essence? Or has the legend of the Hunter evolved from a historic literary joke?
Edmund Newell is your guide on a fascinating historical investigation. His findings have been beautifully illustrated with original prints by illustrator Charles Shearer.
Edmund Newell is a historian, writer, and contributor to BBC Radio 2’s Pause for Thought. Until recently he was also Principal of Cumberland Lodge, an educational foundation in Windsor Great Park – the land supposedly haunted by Herne the Hunter.
Charles Shearer was born in Kirkwall, Orkney, and studied at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen and at the Royal College of Art, London. As painter, printmaker and illustrator he creates unique portrayals of landscape and places and spaces that nature has reclaimed.
